Natural Ways to Address Allergies

It’s that time of year again, the pollen is in full swing! What can be done naturally to help with the discomfort that is seasonal allergies? There are so many options!

The long-term fix is to work on healing the gut and lowering inflammation. Seasonal allergies as well as food allergies are very strongly related to poor gut health. Healing the gut takes time, so while you work on healing your gut there are several other natural ways to address allergies.

Herbs

There are several herbs that are great for addressing allergies and you should have some of them in your home already. These include:

  • stinging nettle
  • rosemary
  • turmeric
  • ginger
  • elderberry
  • butterbur
  • garlic
  • angelica root
  • chrysanthemum flower
  • yarrow
  • alfalfa (make sure it is nongmo)

Herbal tincture

Sinus Saver from Earthley is fabulous for seasonal allergies. It contains stinging nettle, elderberry, turmeric, black pepper and dandelion root, which packs quite the herbal punch against allergies. The alcohol-free version is much more pleasant to consume than the alcohol version in my opinion, unless you enjoy the sharpness of strong alcohol.

This can be taken as often as needed. It does seem to work better if you take it consistently during allergy season.

Herbal capsules

If you prefer to take your herbs in pill form, Rootology is a great option. It has several different herbs in it to address allergies. This one is not breastfeeding or pregnancy safe, however.

Herbal tea

Another option is to consume tea with any of the herbs mentioned above in it. Preferably go with loose leaf tea as tea bags leach microplastics, which you do not want.

Homeopathy

There are several different homeopathics for allergies. Of course, which specific homeopathic remedy is right is going to depend on your specific symptoms.

Individual homeopathic remedies

Some of the more common individual remedies are:

  • Arsenic Album: for nasal allergies with fluent and burning discharge from the nose with lots of sneezing.
  • Causticum: for a cough to clear the throat, but with an inability to get the mucus out.
  • Euphrasia: for when the eyes are involved. Profuse discharge from the eyes with burning
  • Naturum Mur: is for sneezing with a runny nose and breathing difficulties.

These are generally used in a 30c potency. They should be taken 30min before or after drinking, eating and brushing teeth as eating, drinking and brushing teeth can all interfere with the remedy.

Combination homeopathic remedies

  • AllergyCalm
  • RhinAllergy
  • SinusCalm

Homeopathic protocols

There are even homeopathic protocols for allergies! It is important to note that protocols for homeopathy are not ‘true homeopathy’ as homeopathy really is very individual. That being said I have seen many people have great success with different Banerji protocols.

Cell Salts/Tissue Salts

#2 Calc Phose 6X – post nasal drip
#3 Calc Sulph 6X – detoxification, yellow discharge
#4 Ferr Phos 6X – inflammation, congestive headache, sore throat
#5 Kali Mur 6X – white mucus, swollen glands
#7 Kali Sulph 6X – yellow mucus, congestion and cough worse in evening
#9 Nat Mur 6X – thin clear running discharge

Other Natural Ways

Vitamin C helps stabilize mast cells, reducing histamine response.

Raw local honey, the closer the honey is made to your home the better. The idea is that bees are pollinators and by eating the honey they make you are getting very small amounts of the pollen in the area to help the body to get used to these pollens over time.

Nasal rinses with saline help to clear the congestion out and get things moving along.

Lymph massage with a lymph cream is great for helping to move the drainage through so the body can clear it more quickly. The lymph system doesn’t have it’s own pump, so helping to move it can go a long way.

Water consumption helps the body to flush things out therefore helping to decrease allergy symptoms.

Conclusion

There are several different options when it comes to addressing allergies naturally. Sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to figure out which ones work the best for you specifically.
