I have tried several different clean nontoxic makeup brands through the years, and these are the brands that I keep coming back to.
Why nontoxic makeup?
Your skin is your biggest organ, and it only takes 26 seconds for a chemical on your skin to be absorbed into your blood stream. There are so many chemicals that are known to cause cancer, disrupt hormones and so much more in traditional makeup.
The best place to start if you are wondering about the toxicity of the makeup you are currently using is EWG’s skin deep database. This database allows you to look up products and individual ingredients. The product over all is given a rating as well as each individual ingredient. If there are any known concerns those are listed as well as the source of the data.

Recommended Brands
These are the four brands that I personally use. 100% Pure pigments their products with fruit whereas the other three companies are mineral makeup companies. Both Toups and Co and Root Pretty do use titanium dioxide, which does have cancer concerns if inhaled. Which your chances of inhaling it are pretty slim with normal usage, but that is up to you and how comfortable you are with that risk.
The minerals in the mineral makeup are not micronized so they sit on the skin and are not absorbed.
Toups and Co, Root Pretty and Kingdom Come Home over all have less ingredients and you are probably familiar with all of the ingredients or at least most of them. 100% Pure uses more ingredients generally and can contain ingredients you aren’t familiar with.
Affordable Nontoxic Makeup
Affordability wise, Root Pretty tends to be the one that is more affordable, but it really depends on the specific product. 100% Pure is the one that tends to be more expensive most of the time. If you get the gift sets that helps cut down costs. They also frequently will send out 15% off coupons, so watch your email. Their subscription boxes also help make things more affordable.
For Toups and Co Organics, if you use the code “DrMarissaBrand” you get 10% off of your purchase, so keep that in mind.
Some of these companies do offer their own rewards program as well, so make sure you join those to help cut costs.

Nontoxic Eyeshadow
If you are looking for a nontoxic eyeshadow Root Pretty has the biggest selection of the three companies. They also offer samples so you can try some colors for a few dollars. Their eyeshadows also come in pressed and unpressed. Quite often when you order you also get a sample included with your order to try for free.
100% Pure, Toup and Co Organics and Kingdom Come Home are not far behind with their nontoxic eyeshadow collections. 100% Pure offers palettes, which include 3 eyeshadows, a blush and highlighter in each palette. They also offer individual pressed eye shadows as well.
Toups and Co Organics has an eyeshadow palette and also offers a free compact if you buy 3 or more pf the individual eye shadows at a time. All of their eyeshadows are also pressed.
Kingdom Come Home has a mix of pressed and unpressed as well as palates and no palates. Their wine pressed eyeshadow is hands down my favorite eye shadow I have ever owned.

Mascara
Of the four companies I have tried Root Pretty’s, 100% Pure’s and Kingdom Come Home’s mascara. Root Pretty’s was great at first, but also dried out really quickly for me. 100% Pure’s on the other hand worked great and didn’t dry out so fast. I can get about 3 months with 100% Pure’s, longer if I add saline to it to keep it moist. (Which you are supposed to change your mascara bottle every 3-6 months anyway.) Kingdom Come Home’s I liked for a more natural look. They do offer an eyelash primer to help get a more dramatic look as well.
Foundation
100% Pure has the best foundation selection. Whether you are looking for the best nontoxic foundation for oily skin, dry skin, or combination skin they have options for you and those options vary in coverage and finishes as well, so you can find what works best for your skin. They do offer samples for some of the foundation options, but not all. The problem with their foundation is they are so often out of stock that it is hard to actually get some.
I personally really love their 2nd skin foundation. It is so light and doesn’t crease, like I have dealt with, with other foundations.
Toups and Co Organics and Root Pretty have less options, but what they do offer is great. Their powder foundations are pretty equal to each other and really come down to which company has a color that matches you better. Both of these companies offer foundation samples. Toups and Co Organics does offer a liquid foundation as well. Root Pretty on the other hand has some tinted moisturizers and cream options.
Kingdom Come Home offers liquid as well as powder and their liquid is actually tallow and goat milk based which is pretty awesome. They also offer a quiz to help figure out which color will work best for you.

Vegan Nontoxic Makeup
If having vegan makeup is important to you all four companies offer vegan options, so you have a variety to choose from.
Which is the best nontoxic makeup?
It really is going to depend on what you are looking for. In the end you really can’t go wrong with Toups and Co Organics, Root Pretty, 100% Pure or Kingdom Come Home. They each offer so much, that you should be able to find what you are looking for. I personally use things from all four companies.
